Set in serene and lush surroundings with panoramic views of unspoilt countryside, this is the place to unwind and relax.


Bougainvillea consists of a main house and five bungalows spread over 1 acre of land.You can rent the rooms individually, or take on the complete villa to ensure you, your friends or family’s privacy in the calm and luxurious surroundings.All rooms have AC and hot water, built in cupboards. Bed linen, duvets and pillows are imported from Scandinavia. The rooms can be taken individually or the entire villa can be taken to ensure your privacy.

The beautiful infinity pool is surrounded by ample sunloungers and if you can tear yourself away to the stone garden you will find a Jacuzzi and a steambath, designed for the Bougainvillea Retreat by the talented Ea Lind. Accompanied by the sounds from the valley let yourself drift away enjoying a body massage, body scrub or body mask followed by a steam bath.

On the breakfast table you will find homemade bread, fresh juice, curd and treacle, fruits and much more. There is a small select menu with delicious and healthy Sri Lankan and western cuisine. At the Bougainvillea Retreat they grow quite a few of their own vegetables and fruits and strive to use local and regional and fresh foods from local markets. When possible free range of meat and organic vegetables are served.

Garden rooms

The five Scandinavian style garden rooms each have a private terrace overlooking the lush greenery, where you can enjoy a good book or watch the birds and the occasional monkey swing by in the trees above. Two of the garden rooms share a little garden, and is ideal for a big family or families travelling together. Outside and between the garden rooms is a tea station, where you at all times can have a cup of tea or coffee. All rooms have A/C.

There are no televisions or intercom systems in the rooms, but you are very welcome to use either the mini cinema or the television in the main house, which has cable and is connected to all major international channels. There is an iPod player in some of the rooms where you can connect your iPod and immerse yourself in your favourite tunes.

The infinity pool is located next to the main house, and overlooks the valley and Victoria Lake. There is plenty of opportunity to lounge on the sun chairs and enjoy a refreshing drink.

There is a very well equipped mini cinema in the basement with big screen, sounds system and more than 1.000 DVDs for you to chose from.

  • Billiard

On ground level overlooking the pool area, there is a billiard table where you can have a relaxing game of billiard before or after dinner.

  • Library

There’s a well stocked library in the main house, which also holds the guest computer. The books in the library are from around the world and the subjects stretch from art and design to the latest crime novels.

  • Dining

An abundant breakfast is offered and a small but delicious lunch and dinner menu. A small snack menu will be available during the day. The experienced cook Selvaraj caters for a variety of tastes from an excellent spicy Sri Lankan curry to a beautifully cooked 3 course menu inspired by traditional Sri Lankan cuisine. The retreat keeps chicken and ducks so freshly laid eggs are served for breakfast every morning. The retreat makes their own bread, cakes and ice creams, which all add to that feeling of being at home.

Wi-Fi is available throughout the retreat and can be used freely by guests.

  • Bird watching

Bougainvillea Retreat and the surroundings are home to more than 100 indigenous bird species of Sri Lanka.Join Mike Morley who has lived in Sri Lanka for 15 years on an early morning bird walk to spot some of these beautiful birds.Mike is also a local snake expert and is currently involved in catching venomous snakes for a research project on the Island to produce anti-venom for snake bites in Sri Lanka.Bird walks start around 6-30am and last between two and a half to three hours. Maximum four people at any given time.
