Heritance Ahungalla is a five-star luxury hotel with 152 rooms located on 15 acres of beachfront on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast. Heritance Ahungalla was designed by local architect Geoffrey Bawa, famous for blending interior and exterior spaces, connecting buildings with the natural environment.You can see this for yourself as you first approach the hotel. Your first view is of a group of stately coconut trees reflected in a mirror-like pool, before your gaze slides across the polished floor of the open lobby straight through to the ocean beyond.

The infinity pool makes you feel as if you are in the ocean itself when you get in and your eye level is just above the water.The stylish bedrooms and suites offer wonderful sea views. Accommodation

Hotel has two swimming pools and provides free towels, sunbeds and sun umbrellas – please ask the pool attendant. Pools are attended by lifeguards, but please supervise your children closely.

  • Infinity Pool

The Infinity Pool is one of architect Geoffrey Bawa’s ingenious concepts. The pool, right next to the main lobby, guides your eye to the ocean as you enter the hotel. It looks as if the edge of the pool blends with the water of the ocean, giving the impression that you are in the sea, although the beach separates the pool and the ocean. The traditional boat placed in the middle of the pool is an icon of the hotel adds a touch of local culture. Poolside seating, bars and the Mustard Coffee Shop make this a favourite place to soak, sunbathe or enjoy a cocktail.

  • Resident's Pool

The Resident's Pool is located in a private area of the hotel grounds and is not open to non-residents. The branches of a nearby tree dip almost into the pool, providing more shade and the ambience of a natural pool. The Wall Bar offers drinks and snacks throughout the day.

  • Babysitting

You can book a babysitter at a fee at the reception.

  • Gym

Modern air-conditioned gym is fully equipped with free weights, treadmills and exercise machines. Animators are available at all times to advise and help you.The gym is free for all hotel guests.Open: 8am – 9pm

  • Cycling

Explore the back roads around the hotel, cycling through quiet villages and cinnamon plantations. You ride past paddy fields, hilltop temples and quiet streams.Local families welcome and wave, and may invite you into their houses to show you ceilings of drying cinnamon quills. A 15km circular route from the hotel will take around two hours. The roads are fairly flat, and once you are off the main coast road there is little traffic. Guide would be provided at a cost.

Things to do

The unique pools and wonderful beach will invite you to spend your time relaxing around the hotel.If you want something different indulge in a variety of entertainment activities. The Heritance Ahungalla offer various activities, such as water aerobics and entertainment – live bands and cultural shows in the Mirror Lounge by the Pool Bar in the evening. The hotel also has its own nightclub and disco. As one of the few five-star hotel nightclubs in the area, it is also popular with the locals, and there can be a good crowd on Friday and Saturday nights.

If you’d like to explore a bit further, there’s plenty to see in the local area, especially if you’re a nature lover. You can learn what the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery is doing to help save local turtles, or go on a river trip on theMadu Ganga to see mangrove forests and prawn fishermen. Alternatively, you can take to the sea to go whale watching.If you’re interested in local culture and lifestyle, the nearest village of Ambalangoda is known for its antiques and masks, or you can see how moonstones are mined.

It’s also fascinating to compare the landscaping styles of the Bawa brothers – hotel architect Geoffrey at Lunuganga and his younger sibling Bevis at Brief GardenSlightly further afield, Galle is worth a visit for its brooding fort and colonial history.
