  • Batticaloa

The vibrant town of Batticaloa is located only 45 Kms from Maalu Maalu, and it is the perfect place to experience a fascinating collection of sights, sounds and scents.The Puliyanthivu area of Batticaloa is filled with historical and cultural monuments that are best discovered by walking through the main street. Explore the grand St. Mary’s Cathedral, the iconic Batticaloa Gate, and the impressive Jami-Us-Salam mosque, among many others. Enjoy the colonial architecture of the schools in the area, such as St. Michael’s College and St. Vincent’s Girls High School.

The Old Dutch Fort is the main attraction of the Puliyanthivu area. It is an impressive structure originally built by the Portuguese in 1628, but later captured by the Dutch. This square-shaped structure with 4 bastions meets the welcoming waters of the blue lagoon on two sides creating a spectacular sight.

Batticaloa Bazaar is a lively local market that offers everything from spices and fresh vegetables to intriguing handicrafts, capturing the authentic flavours of Batticaloa.   • Polonnaruwa

Take a half-day tour of the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, a renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site, which majestically portrays Sri Lanka’s grand past.

Pay a visit to the Rankot Viharaya, the largest dagoba in Polonnaruwa with a mighty girth of 550ft. Another impressive monument is the “Gal Potha” (stone book), which is a massive 26 foot slab of granite where King Nissankamulla’s heroic deeds were set in stone by scribes of that time.The Gal Viharaya is one of the best-known sites in Polonnaruwa, with magnificent statues of Lord Buddha carved entirely out of granite. The most prominent effigy stands at a height of 23 feet, and it has been said that the statue’s pose and facial expression depict supreme compassion.

The Potgul Viharaya, or “Library Monastery” is a unique site, as its auditorium-like construction provided some wonderful acoustics for chanting ancient texts out loud, which would have created quite an ambiance to an audience from Polonnaruwa’s past.Visitors to the ruins of the city will also get the chance to witness the many monkeys now roaming around the ruins, which they have adopted as their ‘kingdom’.Polonnaruwa is the perfect place to explore on a half-day tour, and visitors will be back in time to enjoy a splendid seafood lunch fit for a king at Maalu Maalu.

Explore the splendid wildlife kingdom of Minneriya National Park, which is home to some rare and endangered species of Sri Lanka’s wildlife. This nature sanctuary is located roughly between Habarana and the historic city of Polonnaruwa.Visitors to this eco-tourist haven will discover an exotic array of wildlife such as elephants, leopards, deer and birds scattered through the 8,890 hectares of the park. A fortunate few might even catch a glimpse of the majestic Sri Lankan elephant herds, which gather around the Minneriya Tank for a drink or a bath to cool off. A famous annual occurrence at the tank is the gathering of 300 elephants, which is the world’s largest convocation of animals recorded in the wild, informally known as ‘The Minneriya Gathering’. Minneriya Park is also famous for being a bird-watchers paradise, and it is home to some species found only in Sri Lanka, such as the Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot, the Sri Lanka Jungle Fowl, and the Sri Lanka Gray Hornbill.For an exciting wildlife adventure, embark on a jeep safari, which can be booked at the resort’s reception. It is a busy breeding ground for the blue-rock pigeon, and it can be easily reached by motorboat, available to rent from the various boat stands along the beachfront.The Koneswaram Hindu Temple, dating back to 205 BC, is a splendid tribute to the deity of Shiva in the Hindu faith. It is located on top of a scenic promontory that provides panoramic views of the city, Gokarna Bay and the Indian Ocean. Koneswaram is a famous temple that boasts strong historical associations with various Hindu myths and legends. Many of these are detailed in its ornate Gopuram (monumental tower) above the temple entrance that features the impressively intricate South Indian architectural style.

The hot springs at Kanniyai are situated a short 8 Kms from Trincomalee. Visitors can bathe in the seven springs famed for their therapeutic properties.
