Nuwaraeliya Golf Club

Nuwaraeliya Golf Club

Nuwara Eliya Golf Club is one of the main features of this hill station, developed by the British in the late 19th-century. The club, however, does not show its age, with the 5,550m of 70-par course being perfectly maintained. The course features numerous bunkers, water hazards and dense rough, which when combined with long, narrow fairways mean an exacting challenge. At 595m, the sixth hole is the longest in Sri Lanka, and has a river running through the middle of it to add tropical spice. The course is hilly so that over each rise, players are treated to a new stunning view of the natural surroundings – all at 1,950m above sea level. In the verandah or atmospheric wooden colonial-style bar of the club, you will meet local golfers able to tell you more about Nuwara Eliya. Modest accommodation is available. When it gets especially chilly in the evenings, staff light a log fire, adding to the magic of this venerable institution. All year round the climate is pleasant in Nuwara Eliya, a perfect first stop on any golfer’s tour. Don’t be fooled, though – while it may feel you are playing a cool Scottish course, you will soon be reminded of where you really are on spying tea plantations through the trees, or notice people bathing in the river at the eighth.
